Isobar Serves Up Some Thanksgiving GOODness

This year, the IsobarGOOD Committee celebrated Thanksgiving with a visit to Breakthrough Ministries Men’s Center in Chicago’s East Garfield Park. Breakthrough Ministries partners with those affected by poverty and opens doors for opportunity through job readiness training, housing assistance, behavioral health counseling, violence prevention initiatives and access to fresh food.

Based on a suggestion from one of our Visual Designers who had previously volunteered at Breakthrough Ministries, the IsobarGOOD Committee visited on Sunday morning to prepare and serve a holiday meal to about 50 residents, visitors and staff. Our morning started at 9:30am when 10 Isobar employees arrived with ingredients in hand.

The Isobar team worked together in the days beforehand to plan a healthful, but indulgent menu of Caesar salad, spinach lasagna, baked ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls and corn. For a sweet treat to round out the meal, we had blueberry, peach, apple, pumpkin, and sweet potato pies — with plenty of whipped cream of course.

The cooking went smoothly (with the exception of a last minute grocery store run for more ricotta!) and the lasagna came out of the oven at 11:55 am, just as a line started to form outside the kitchen. As we started serving the meal, we realized that at least two plates would be necessary for each diner because we had prepared so many options!

This event was particularly fun because it was a family affair. Several Isobarians brought their children and teenagers who were a huge help in peeling potatoes, chopping lettuce, and even entertaining our diners with some fun dance moves! After everyone was served, we sat down to eat with the men. Hearing their stories, watching the football game together and connecting over the meal was truly a special experience.

The IsobarGOOD committee’s visit to Breakthrough Ministries Men’s Center brought to light everything we have to be thankful for this holiday season. Isobar is always looking for opportunities to volunteer in the community and give back to causes that are near and dear to our hearts.
