2018 Topline Report

The Topline Report is our broad, annual review of the link between digital strength, shareholder value, and future revenue. As part of the ongoing Isobar and Alpha DNA Digital Strength Index (DSI) study, we look at nearly 10,000 data points across the top 1,000 companies in the U.S. to identify key leaders and laggards in major categories such as audience and content engagement.

Key Findings

  • Companies in the top decile beat quarterly estimates 65% over the past 5 years. The bottom decile? Just 52.7% of the time.
  • Of the 11 GICS industry sectors, Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology lead in Digital Strength.
  • The long-term impact of being a digital laggard is devastating, with a 14.9% loss in shareholder value over a three-year period, a decline that increases with time.
  • When compared to the 2017 Topline Report, the separation between the top 30 and bottom 30 has increased across all sectors except Healthcare.

 

Empirical Evidence Paints a Convincing Picture

Companies in the top decile of the Digital Strength Index (DSI) have next-year revenue of +14%. The bottom decile has -8%. That’s a 22-point difference between digital leaders and laggards in a single year.
